Sunday, May 29, 2011 / 7:30 p.m. $15+ University of Michigan Symphony Band will perform in Los Angeles at Walt Disney Concert Hall, its last stop of a three-week tour to China. The performance will feature a work by Chinese composer Bright Sheng, the first composer-in-residence for the New York City Ballet, and a performance by masterful Chinese violinist Xiang Gao, who has been featured frequently on CCTV and has performed for the President Hu, JinTao. Why did Chinese immigrants enter this business in the late 19th century? What led to their success in attracting non-Chinese patrons, given that Chinese food was unfamiliar to them, many who were hostile to Chinese immigrants as well.
